Forget everything you know about a standard residential toilet. These are aircraft-grade vacuum flush systems, similar to what you find on a Boeing 787. The toilet bowl holds a small amount of water. When you press the flush button, a differential pressure valve opens. The pressure difference between the cabin (atmospheric) and the holding tank (negative pressure) literally sucks the contents out of the bowl with a loud thump and a hiss of air. BalconyDoors and HVAC Short-Cycling

If the balcony door is a sliding glass door with a single-pane window, the heat transfer is massive. The HVAC unit in that cabin will run constantly and never catch up. This wastes fuel and makes the cabin feel humid. Look for double-pane glass or a sealed door system. The Century Paragon uses double-pane glass with a thermal break. The President No. 5 does not. Your cabin temperature will fluctuate by 3°C to 5°C on the older ship.

The Ship Lift and Lock System Infrastructure

The Three Gorges Dam ship lift is an engineering masterpiece, but it does not affect your cabin directly. What affects you is the lock cycling time. The Five-Step Ship Lock takes roughly 4 hours to transit. During that time, the ship is stationary or moving slowly. The engines are idling. The HVAC system is running on auxiliary power, which means the water chiller is working harder. This is when the air conditioning tends to fail on older ships. The condenser coils can't dump heat because there is minimal airflow over the hull. Here is the hard truth. You are not going to fix the ship's plumbing. But you can ask three questions before boarding that will tell you everything you need to know.

  • When was the last time the greywater line was rodded? If the crew looks confused, your shower might back up.
  • What brand of toilet flush valve is in the cabin? If they say "Jabsco" or "Dometic," the vacuum system is high quality. If they say "unknown," you are gambling.
  • Is there a booster pump on my deck? If the answer is no, choose a lower deck.
