If the impeller is dull or chipped, the solids stay too large, and they settle at the bottom of the tank. That creates a “sludge blanket” that never gets evacuated by the shore pump. Eventually, it solidifies into a paste that requires a crew member to enter the tank with a shovel. No ship advertises this, but every captain knows that a macerator inspection every 200 hours is the difference between a smooth voyage and a biohazard cleanup. Waste disposal on the Yangtze is not a glamorous topic, but it is the most critical mechanical system on your cruise ship. A reliable vacuum system, clean holding tanks, and a functional pump-out protocol keep your trip smelling fresh and running smoothly. Ignore the carpet quality. Check the vent grates. Look at the toilet flush strength. That tells you more about the ship than the brochure ever will.
